Union Castle House, Canute Road, Southampton, SO14 3FJ

Currell Commercial, on behalf of the Liquidator, Jeremy Frost of Frost Business Recovery have arranged a freehold sale of a detached Grade II listed building, Union Castle House, Southampton to 21 Marloes Road Ltd.

Southampton is a major port. It is noted for its association with RMS Titanic, which in 1912 sailed from Southampton as well as the Spitfire and more recently a number of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Union Castle House stands on the edge of the mid-19th century docks. It was built in about 1846, and its architect was Alfred Giles, engineer to the docks. It was built originally as the Customs House, and remained such until 1902. After that date it was shared by the Board of Trade and the Union Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd. The Union Castle obtained sole occupancy of the building at some time after 1922. The building’s ground floor was extended on the street frontage at some time between 1910 and 1933.

The Union Castle line was one of the major shipping lines in Southampton that operated a fleet of passenger liners and freighters between Europe and Africa from 1900 to 1977.

The City Council archaeologists recorded Union Castle House in Canute Road before it was refurbished as residential units. The record was made in June 2000 on behalf of Brockwood Estates Ltd, when the building was converted to provide 13 flats with car parking spaces.
